Notes from the Studio
Every painting begins somewhere quieter than the room it eventually lives in. A first entry from the studio on how a piece becomes what it is.

Every painting begins somewhere quieter than the room it eventually lives in. A note. A color remembered from a walk. A photograph I did not take but cannot forget. The studio is the place where those fragments slow down enough to become something.
What follows is not a manifesto. It is a way of working, and a way of looking. I wanted to set it down before the next series begins, so you understand what you are holding when a piece from the Atelier arrives at your door.
The design comes first
I spend more time composing than painting. Composition is the decision the piece cannot recover from. The brushwork can improvise, the palette can shift, but a composition that fights itself will fight the room forever. So I sit with each one. I reject eight before I keep one.
Once a composition earns its place in the catalog, it travels to the studio in Brooklyn. A master painter receives the brief, the reference, the palette notes, and the dimensions. From there, the work becomes theirs.
Hand, not machine
There is no such thing as two identical originals. A painter adds weight where I asked for light. A stroke veers. A color deepens through layering that no plan could have predicted. This is the part I love most and the part I relinquish. The painting I send you is not the painting I imagined. It is better.
What you are buying
A signed original on canvas. A certificate that names it, dates it, and places it in a continuous series. A piece that will develop its own small rituals inside your home. Art, in the old sense: something you live with for a long time, and which lives with you back.
The Journal is where I share the work that happens around the paintings. Studio notes, stories from collectors' homes, the quiet questions I keep returning to about what it means to make art for people you may never meet. Thanks for reading the first one.
